Is the Beauty Industry Becoming the Next Fast Fashion?

More than 120 billion units of packaging are produced globally each year, contributing to the loss of 18 million acres of forest annually.

The beauty industry is a major factor to pollution found in landfills, and it’s time to slow down the skincare industry. When we created Stripped Beauty, we knew we wanted to have complete brand transparency and make each product in small batches with intention and purpose. Slow skincare takes skincare back down to the basics; the formulation, production, distribution, and ultimately the founder. We need to reframe the industry, and it starts with brands recognizing how marketing and releasing new serums every other week can lead to overconsumption, and ultimately encourage people to only buy what they need.

This ongoing problem can be compared to fast fashion, or cheap and trendy clothing that is made at incredibly fast and high rates. Skincare has followed this same dangerous, unsustainable practice in order to follow trends that seem to pop up every other day. Trendy skincare should not be the goal, the goal is effective skincare backed by modern research that promotes skin health. Using 10-15 different products in your skincare routine may feel luxurious, but it may not be the best for your skin, or our environment. We believe in stripping your skincare routine back down to the basics, and adding treatment products as needed. At Stripped Beauty, we follow a general rule of cleanse, treat, and moisturize.

So, with all of this being said, how is Stripped Beauty practicing what we preach? When Stripped was founded, we wanted to bring the science back into skincare. At the end of the day, skincare is a science and chemists know best. Our cosmetic chemist, Cathie Arpino, has over 30 years of experience formulating skincare products, focusing on naturally-derived ingredients. All our products are formulated, tested, manufactured, and shipped right from our lab. Each product is freshly made in small batches based on our customers' needs to ensure nothing is wasted or over-produced. When you receive your package from Stripped Beauty, we can guarantee it will arrive at your doorstep fresh.

Here’s some other ways we encourage you to help us slow down skincare together:

  • Try to be mindful when it comes to over-consumption. We believe less is more and encourage our customers to only buy what you need. Shop your own stash before purchasing a product if you already have one that works. Another great idea is to swap or gift products that didn’t work for your skin with friends, instead of throwing them away.
  • Opt for brands that align with sustainable practices and source ingredients from ethical suppliers.
  • Consider your beauty footprint. Remember to always clean out and recycle your beauty packaging.
  • Research brands and don’t fall for greenwashing. Words like natural, eco, and sustainable have little to no regulation.

Climate change is real, and it is happening. We can all do our part to lessen the great impact that the beauty industry has made by choosing to produce sustainably, and shop sustainably not only for the health of the environment, but for the health of our skin.
