3 Things You Don't Normally Think About with Aging

OCT 4, 2021 · Written by Susana Gotera for Stripped Beauty

The industry has left a negative connotation on how we view mature skin when it comes to aging skin. We see products that encourage us to get rid of our wrinkles, smile lines, and pigmentation at a very young age. Even now, at the ripe age of 20, I would be lying if I said that I don't care for how my skin will look 20 years from now. Of course, it's good to care about your future, but why has the industry become SO hyper-focused on anti-aging? Why can't we focus on how those "imperfections" got there in the first place? Aging shouldn't be viewed as something to run from but something to embrace. Those experiences and memorable moments brought you to where you are portrayed physically on your face. By embracing these unwanted blemishes, you can achieve the highest form of self-love when it comes to you and your body. But it's important to note that sometimes self-love can also be how you take care of your skin and how you can control those blemishes.

Smiles Lines Come From The Happiest Moments

Smile lines are a natural part of aging. They appear over time from the sides of your nose to your mouth. In my perspective, these vertical lines hold countless memories from when you were your happiest. To control these lines, using products that tackle your wrinkles are your best bet. Including products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinol, and peptides in your skincare routine can help manage these lines and slow down the process of aging skin. Although the difference will not appear as quickly as we all wish it will, consistent use of those products can positively impact your skin.

Wrinkles Show Wisdom

Wrinkles are also an unavoidable and natural part of aging that the industry loves to focus on. Wrinkles show your journey, the reason you are who you are. The way advertisements covered wrinkled skin with smooth photoshop made me think I needed to invest all my money in anti-wrinkle products. But seeing that they are unavoidable, there are definitely ways you can control them and slow their appearance. Wearing SPF is essential to reduce your risk of skin cancer, but it also plays a tremendous role in reducing the formation of wrinkles. So making sure that you are applying SPF daily can take the stress of how your skin will look in the future off your chest.

Ray of Sunshine

Pigmentation can happen as your skin matures and is also a natural part of aging. We all love our fun summer days when we soak up the sun and feel the warmth on our skin. With exposure to the sun, parts of your skin like acne scars can appear darker over time, along with sunspots. Although this is a natural process, it's always good to wear SPF every day to avoid sunspots darkening. Creating a barrier between your skin and the sun is vital to protecting your skin from sunlight harm. Hydration is also crucial when it comes to pigmentation. Opting for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid can help boost hydration in your dry skin.

Aging skin represents everything you've gone through. The stories you tell and the smiles you share are all seen in your mature skin. So embrace that! And remember that there is no specific product that will help you manage the many things that come with mature skin. Focusing on different ingredients like retinol, SPF, and Hyaluronic Acid can bring you closer to feeling all the love you and your skin deserve.
